George Siemon, CEO and a founding farmer of Organic Valley Family of Farms, recently received the prestigious Sustie Award from the Ecological Farming Association for his contributions to sustainable agriculture. Siemon joins an illustrious lineage of past winners of the Sustie that includes Alice Waters, Vandana Shiva, Lundberg Family and Robert Rodale.
The Organic Center has hired former executive marketing director at Utne Reader, Lisa Proctor as its vice president of communications. In this new position, Proctor will give voice to the vast array of peer-reviewed research The Organic Center has funded in previous years, and spearhead the Center’s communications campaign, Mission Organic 2010. In addition to Utne, Proctor has worked with Green Mountain Energy, launched Minneapolis’ first green marketing agency and created and produced “Earth Trends,” an NBC affiliate environmental television series segment.
A.M. Todd recently acquired Moore Ingredients, manufacturer of natural and certified organic specialty ingredients. Going forward Moore Ingredients will operate as a division of A. M. Todd., which focuses on the oral care, confectionery and beverage industries. As of the date of the agreement, March 23, 2007, Moore Ingredients has been in business 15 years and A.M. Todd 138 years.
Tully’s Coffee Corporation, a fully handcrafted coffee roaster, is now partnering with Guayakí to offer certified organic and fairly traded yerba mate. Guayakí yerba mate products including brewed mate, mate shakes, a mate supplement for smoothies and bottled iced teas are available at all Tully’s locations.
The Organic Trade Association (OTA) has selected Matthew Holmes as managing director for OTA in Canada. Holmes will have overall responsibility for implementation of all activities and operations of the association in Canada. OTA’s liaison in Canada, Stephanie Wells, will continue her work on behalf of the association as well. Most recently, Holmes held the position of acting executive director of the Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network (ACORN), promoting the growth of the organic market in Atlantic Canada and representing the region nationally during consultations on Canada’s new federal regulations.
Global Organics Ltd., supplier of organic ingredients to the natural food and cosmetics industries worldwide, is pleased to announce the addition of two new members to its team. Lisa White has been hired as director of operations and business development. Lisa brings over 25 years of experience in the food business to Global, working with such companies as Annie’s Homegrown, Newman’s Own Organics, Nantucket Off-Shore Seasonings and Stirrings among others.
Ed White (no relation) has also joined Global Organics as quality assurance manager. Previously employed at Shaw’s Supermarkets, Stop & Shop and Amstar Corp. (Domino Sugar), Ed will be responsible for maintaining a total quality program for Global Organics.
