Biodegradable Flow Wrap Film
U.K. food retail giant Sainsbury’s has adopted a biodegradable cellulose flow wrap—NatureFlex—for its organic produce range as part of its ongoing commitment to environmentally-friendly packaging. NatureFlex E305 comprises a biodegradable base film derived from wood pulp with speciality barrier coatings formulated from nitrocellulose, which contain natural minerals and resins. The film is micro-perforated and converted before being supplied to producers of Sainsbury’s pre-packaged organic fruit and vegetables. NatureFlex is used by Sainsbury’s in combination with starch trays and paper labeling manufactured from 50% post-consumer waste to create a complete biodegradable pack.

PureOx Patented Ozone Technology
The PureOx sterilization system utilizes newly developed technology to sustain the antimicrobial activity of gaseous ozone. Cosmed holds three patents describing our techniques to harness the sterilizing power of ozone in the PureOx process. Generators located at the treatment facility use a controlled electrical discharge to create ozone. Newly generated ozone is pumped into a closed stainless steel chamber containing the target product. Exposure is continued for a time sufficient to sterilize the materials within the vessel. Excess ozone is removed from the treatment vessel and is converted back to oxygen prior to release. Ozone within the product reverts to atmospheric oxygen within minutes. The only detectable difference between treated and untreated materials is the absence of microbial contamination and insect infestation.

New Peracetic Acid Foaming Sanitizing System
FMC Corp. received an amended registration from the California Environmental Protection Agency for the use of VigorOx liquid sanitizer and disinfectant (peracetic acid) with the high retention system (HRS) foaming system on environmental and food contact surfaces. The HRS foaming system allows peracetic acid to be applied with a unique, patent-pending foam adjuvant formulation. Because of the highly retentive foaming activity, the efficiency of the peracetic acid is improved through extended contact time on vertical and oblique surfaces, including undersides of equipment and conveyor belts (as shown). Because peracetic acid can now be applied in open areas through HRS, control of major food pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli is greatly improved. Because VigorOx is delivered in a foam formulation, cleaning crews can actually see where peracetic acid is applied.
